This recipe was submitted by our local neighbor and customer, Jean Robinson. Jean says this makes a fantastic sandwich bread, or a delicious slice of toast (with a bit of FRF raw honey spread on it, of course!)

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups warm water
  • 2 Tbsp active dry yeast
  • ⅓ cup melted honey
  • 4 cups white flour

  • 3 Tbsp melted butter
  • ⅓ cup melted honey
  • 1 ½ tsp salt
  • 2 ½ cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup ground flaxseed
  • 1 cup toasted sunflower seeds

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix warm water, yeast and ⅓ cup melted honey. Add 4 cups white flour and stir to combine. Let set for 30 minutes, or until big and bubbly.
  2. Mix into yeast mixture: 3 tablespoons melted butter, ⅓ cup honey, and salt. Mix together whole wheat flour, ground flaxseed and sunflower seeds. Add to above mixture. Flour a flat surface and knead until not real sticky – just pulling away from the counter, but still sticky to the touch. You may have to add another cup of flour to achieve this. Turn into a greased bowl, turning one so that dough is coated with oil. Cover with a dishtowel and let rise in a warm place until doubled.
  3. Punch down, and divide into 3 loaves (or 8 mini loaves). Place in greased loaf pan, brush surface with butter or oil. Allow to rise until the dough has topped the pans by one inch.
  4. Bake at 350 degrees F for 25-30 minutes. Do not overbake. If you do not want a crispy crust, brush the tops of baked loaves with melted butter.
  5. Enjoy warm or toasted with a dab of Fresh Roots Farm raw honey!
